VASANTHA DE SILVA

No one epitomizes Hair Artistry in the South East Asian region better than Vasantha De Silva. A master of his passion and a loud voice on the personality-altering power of a great head of hair, Vasantha began his upscale salon KESS in the early 90’s in Colombo.

Early years
Vasantha threw away an engineering degree to allow himself to be swallowed whole by a life of art and artisanship dedicated to hair. Having trained in Europe and Australia, and winning apprentice of the year in Milan, he began Salon KESS in Colombo.
KESS changed the way Sri Lankans viewed hair and the cutting, styling and colouring of it and offered what none of his peers at home did- true, transformative styling that stayed with you long after your visit to the salon had ended.

The Artist

Elegant yet outspoken, Vasantha’s work is much like his personality, and has graced numerous ad campaigns, magazine covers and runways. His hair art has earned him an almost fanatical following of clientele who swear by his methods and the expertise of his team of professionals at KESS. Titillated by the challenge of transforming people completely by working on their hair, “Hair Mad” Vasantha admits to dedicating his early morning hours to dreaming up new structures and texturising methods. His early years in engineering, still contribute to his working methods, giving him precision and the strongly rooted belief that creativity and mathematics are always interconnected.

Ethos

Trying everyday to be better than he was yesterday, this creative mastermind never stops working. An ardent sportsman and animal & women’s rights activist, Vasantha’s ethos is to pick difficult battlegrounds in everything he does, and conquer them. Criticism fuels his drive to keep doing more and better things rather than be satisfied with just existing.

Recognised among his peers as a revolutionary in the hair care and styling industry in Sri Lanka, Vasantha remains a pioneer, introducing hair trends and styling techniques that truly crown his clients’ personalities and uplifts their style.

It’s never a haircut, it’s always a piece of art.
Craft is everything.
I love creating structures with hair. It’s such a fluid medium to work with.
